Louisiana Downs: Champs Elysees upsets

Jeff Taylor|Sep 18, 2001

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Champs Elysees made the most of her first stakes appearance in Saturday's $150,000 River Cities Breeders' Cup, kicking clear from odds-on favorite Watch late to prevail by1 1/2 lengths. Euryanthe finished a fast-closing third, just a head behind Watch, while second choice Nanie's Dinner faded to finish fourth.

Watch and Nanie's Dinner hooked up early in the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares and dueled through early fractions of 25.01 and 49.04 seconds. Jockey Russell Woolsey tucked Champs Elysees ($21.60) behind those two, and she finished well. She was timed in 1:42.42 over firm going.

Owned by Michael Marenchic and trained by Duane Knipe, Champs Elysees was winning for the fifth time in eight starts.
