LosAl maidens could return for Burke Futurity trials
The timing of three maiden special weight races at 300 yards for 2-year-olds on Friday at Los Alamitos suggests some of those runners could return for the time trials of the Ed Burke Futurity on June 7.
There are several unraced runners in the maiden races with recent workouts and pedigrees that suggest they can play a factor in the juvenile division this summer.
The fifth race, the first of the three consecutive maiden races, is led by first-time starter Apollitical Patty, a half-sister to Zoomin for Spuds, the champion 3-year-old gelding of 2016. Zoomin for Spuds won the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in 2016, Quarter Horse racing’s most prestigious race for older horses.
Apollitical Patty, who races for the family of the late Jim Walker, is trained by Monty Arrossa, who trains Zoomin for Spuds.

Apollitical Patty has had two fast workouts at 220 yards from the gate in recent weeks – 12.3 seconds on April 16 and 12.1 seconds two weeks later.
The fifth race is restricted to fillies. The first-time starters Flight Queen and Three Times Ablaze also have worked quickly. Three Times Ablaze, who worked 220 yards from the gate in 12.5 seconds on April 16, is trained by Jaime Gomez, who won the Kindergarten Futurity for a record eighth time Sunday.
The sixth race is the only open maiden race for 2-year-olds on Friday.
The Gomez-trained Coopers Best Card has finished fifth and second in his first two starts. He was beaten a neck in his most recent race May 9, overcoming a bump at the start.
The first-time starter Rox Win and Garda Da Cash, who was second in his debut, have drawn opposite sides of the gate in the eight-horse field. Rox Win, trained by Mike Casselman, worked 220 yards from the gate in a quick 12.4 seconds on May 5. He starts from the inside. Garda Da Cash was second to Jet Wings One in the Kindergarten Futurity trials on May 3. Jet Wings One finished second in the Kindergarten.
The seventh race, for fillies, is led by the first-time starter J Best Boogie, trained by Gomez. J Best Boogie worked 220 yards from the gate in 12.1 seconds on April 16. She has seven rivals Friday.
First post time is 6 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
