Los Alamitos: Viva Mi Corazon breaks through in PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity

After failing to qualify to four futurities in Texas and New Mexico, Viva Mi Corazon won his first major race in Saturday’s $425,000 Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Breeders’ Futurity at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Cody Jensen for trainer Trey Wood, Viva Mi Corazon was in command throughout the 350-yard race, winning by three-quarters of a length over 9-2 Dynasty of Habits. Sent off favored, Viva Mi Corazon ($6) was timed in 17.22 seconds.

Smithy, an 18-1 shot, was third in the field of 10.

Viva Mi Corazon races for Johnny Trotter and Burnett Ranches. A 2-year-old gelding by First Down Dash, Viva Mi Corazon has won 4 of 7 starts and $187,360. Earlier this year, he ran in time trials for the Sam Houston, Ruidoso, Rainbow and All American futurities, but did not qualify for those races.

Glenn Blodgett of Burnett Ranches said after Saturday’s race that Viva Mi Corazon is a candidate for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity over 400 yards, which has time trials on Nov. 24 and a final on Dec. 15.

Saturday was a remarkable day for Trotter and Wood. Just 80 minutes before the PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity, they combined to win the $408,915 Dash For Cash Futurity at Lone Star Park with Dynastys First Call.
