Los Alamitos Super Derby slated for Saturday
The $972,100 Los Alamitos Super Derby, postponed three weeks to allow for extensive drug testing of the 10 finalists, will be run on Saturday with no changes to the field since time trials were run on Oct. 12.
The 400-yard race for 3-year-old Quarter Horses race was scheduled for Nov. 1, but track officials postponed the event to allow the 30 fastest qualifiers to undergo further tests. The track announced at the time that the list of 10 finalists could change, pending those tests.
The race was originally rescheduled for Nov. 15, and then pushed back another week.
Trainer Eloy Navarro has eight of the 10 finalists for Saturday’s race, including Foose Cash Sr, who won the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last December when trained by Jose De La Torre. Foose Cash Sr was the fastest qualifier from the Oct. 12 trials.
De La Torre is no longer training at Los Alamitos. Last December, De La Torre was told to vacate his stalls at Los Alamitos after a string of clenbuterol positives dating back to the late 2000s. Navarro was suspended in 2012 for having a syringe in his possession.
The leading threat to the Navarro team is Five Bar Cartel, who was second in the All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs in September. Trained by Danny Montes, Five Bar Cartel was a trial race winner on Oct. 12.
