Closer Looks by Mark Ratzky
Race 1
Spot Play
NO DISHONOR (#4, 7-2) may be spotted for action. The 3yo gelding was a strong 2nd routing at OP March 7 (beaten just a head) and was claimed for $50K. He came back vs. straight maidens there March 27 but had a troubled start and caught slop he obviously hates and gave way readily. He’s been given plenty of time since, comes here with NO class drop, gets blinkers, has been working splendidly over this track and gets the leading rider from the recent SA spring/summer meet (Talamo). The presence of toughie Wrightwood will keep his price buoyed.
-Michael Hammersly
Aerial Dancer |
Earned nearly identical figures in the trio of runs down the SA hill, picking up show checks in a pair; blinkers go on and will be trying the dirt and a route of ground for the first time. |
Beach Fever |
Took a bit of money in the Arcadia debut a month ago, didn't have the best of takeoffs and failed to threaten; Glatt wastes little time in giving this one extra distance to work with; right to move forward. |
True Visionary |
Came up empty when making bow back in September, then showed a touch of interest picking up a minor award down the dip in Arcadia; Pupye has solid numbers in all the pertinent categories and he's been training over this layout in sharp fashion. |
No Dishonor |
Lost a heartbreaker the day when he was red-tagged by Audrey at Oaklawn Park, then caught a sloppy track in the most recent and called it a day pretty early; hss been working in steady fashion over this track in the interim, blinkers go on and no doubt catches fast track today. |
Rusty Road |
Son of Point Given hooked a pretty tough customer in American Pride in the only appearance and had nothing left for the stretch, finishing double-digits behind |
Wrightwood |
If he repeats either of his last two races, he's going to be awfully tough here for Harrington and Espinoza; nothing even resembling American Pride or Yard Line in this cast and he's getting the first chance to race over the track he's been calling home. |
Race 2
Hollywood Producer |
Have to like the way this filly has made a move forward with each appearance; put it all together in that 5-furlonger two weeks ago, battling to the stretch and leaving them reeling to make 6-5 look like a gift; tough right back with new pilot Pedroza. |
Lady Now |
Grayson had his mare ready to rock and roll off the 14 month-plus vacation, making it look easy over a bottom-level cast after putting away the early challenge; a San Luis Rey bullet in the interim, but the water gets deeper now. |
Eddies Curl |
Returned to the claiming ranks when last seen in Nov. at Hollypark, took all the money and was up in the final stride; Pereira has made a nice impression since bringing his tack to California. |
Nothing to Hide |
Returned from the Bay Area, joined the Miller barn and earned the graduation papers at most recent asking; left little doubt through the stretch with new best friend Van Dyke guiding and no surprise to see this filly click right back. |
I Like a Kathy |
Brings some serious speed down with her from Albany; misfired at 2nd asking off the romping debut, but opened a long advantage in that try a month ago and could not quite keep it going while well clear of the rest; Antongorgi joins and this one adds fuel to the early fire. |
Race 3
Vulnerable Favorite
LOOP CURRENT EDDIE (#4, 2-1) flashed talent when 2nd in his first 2 starts but both of those came over a year ago on GG’s synthetic track, and after those he ran poorly to be 8th in a stakes on PLN dirt. That, too, was nearly a year ago (July 7), he was vanned off and hasn’t been seen since. He must deal with the long layoff, new surroundings and returns for a tag so there are numerous questions on a horse who’s tabbed as the ML favorite.
-Michael Hammersly
Billy Mac |
Both starts have come going long on turf and hasn't been able to make a dent; now it's back to the drawing board as they drop another notch and try sprinting on dirt in hopes ot turning things around. |
El Rey Misterio |
Sire is 0-for-6 with firsters and the works over at San Luis Rey don't exactly get the pulse racing. |
No Bachi |
The late McCann's Mojave is 5-for-42 with his beginners and she sports some decent local moves; Treece and Guce win races in bunches around here during the evening. |
Loop Current Eddie |

Money Tree |
Took a little tote action in that Phoenix debut in early April and failed to menace in what turned out to be a productive heat; blinkers go on and decent local drills showing. |
Home Run Prize |
Pure Prize has won with 48 of 394 newbies, while Walsh has solid debut numbers; a steady tab here and the rider has made a nice impression. |
Triunfo |
Was triple-digit odds in last and stopped, but that was a tougher group coming down the hill at SA; DeLeon decides the hood should go back on and he could work his way into a share. |
Race 4
Heavenly Trail |
Been a non-factor while racing with much softer over the smaller night track here; appears least likely. |
W. Giles |
Battled hard from between rivals the entire trip and was unable to match the winner while well clear of the rest; a little less distance to cover today and gets the first chance to compete over his home track. |
Noble Metal (GB) |
English import hasn't been able to make much impression to this point, but drop in class could do wonders for his outlook; the blinkers experiment is over after one race and O'Neill will give the leg up to the hustling Pedroza. |
Dallon's Gold |
Had a good run at Emerald last year to begin career, has been a nibbler in three attempts this season in Arizona and Colorado; hard to really get a read on where this one fits classwise. |
Bushwacked |
No factor behind outside rival Happy Idea two back, then showed improved speed under Bejarano when last seen in early May; Sherlock elects to bump him back up a level for this assignment. |
Happy Idea |
The other 3-time victor in the line-up; looked sharp getting the job done when up-close-and-personal the day he was red-tagged, then was part of a spirited early battle going 7 panels with a tougher crew; cozy outside box gives Dreyden some options. |
Race 5
Peacenluvpeacenluv |
Artie Shiller has connected with 7 of his 114 debuting 2-year-olds; in great hands with Miller training and Pedroza at the controls. |
Seve's Road |
Quality Road has seen 2 his 4 firsters reach the circle as his stud career begins; fetched 94K in Fla. in March and O'Neill doesn't have to work them fast to have them ready. |
One More Roll |
By a 10% 2-year-old debut sire; Treece and Guce a formidable team around here when the sun goes down and there are some solid local drills. |
Delaney's Joy |
Gives O'Neill barn two looks at the outcome; took a little bit of money when making bow going a mile on the turf at SA and was never in it behind a romping stablemate. |
Two Six Wins |
Was popular at the windws in the May 23 unveiling, showed speed to midway on the turn and then called it a day; blinkers come off and there's a good 5-furlong move showing. |
Kinsale Sailor |
Successful Appeal has won with 38 of 233 2-year-olds making their first start; has 4 drills since moving base from San Luis Rey; prefer others. |
Dream Police |
In fine hands with Bonde calling the shots; fetched 75K in March and Wildcat Heir is a 20 percent 2-year-old debut sire from a large sample; like the last a.m spin and draws a cozy box. |
Race 6
Synchrotron |
Showed brief speed in the October debut in Arcadia and then lost interest; given a little time, shows up with a claiming price and sports the usual crisp Headley workouts. |
Ron's Boy |
Flashed speed in both starts before going to the sidelines; attracts Kent for sophomore bow and certainly has to be considered. |
Watch It Buster |
Never got into the swing of things, now Pupye sees fit to lower him into a seller; gets the chance to race over the course where he's been training. |
Inspired Wisdom |
Bedford Falls is 2-for-15 to this point in his stud career; Marty Jones can have them ready at first asking and like the bullet half-mile from the gate here last week. |
Charming Jewel |
Sire is 0-for-21 with first time starters; some crisp local moves showing and a post parade and tote check are in order. |
They Call Me Mr. P |
Ran a decent race in what turned out to be a productive heat, then disappeared for two years; respect the barn and like the pair of 6-furlong drills across town for foundation. |
Pride Seeker |
Prompted the issue while wide and gave way in only start, finishing a couple of lengths behind today's rival Watch It Buster; Gallagher has won with 3 of last 9 runners dropping from straight maiden to claiming. |
Race 7
Ciddy's Song |
Earned a decent figure when graduating at first asking at Sunland in late March, now she shows up in the Baffert shedrow while making the next logical step up the ladder; barn and rider have great strike rate and she got acquainted with the track in that 5-furlong spin last week. |
Cloudy Moon |
Been away from the wars for more than 15 months and makes first start with a claiming price attached since the debut; has flashed ability for O'Neill and is likely a nice fit with this kind, but the lengthy vacation is the question mark. |
Wild in the Saddle |
Off since November, she's now in the hot Baltas barn and has been working like she means business over at Santa Anita while shedding the blinkers; has won her share while moving up and down the ladder and an interesting stab. |
Starry Skies |
Showed lots of promise for Jones as a 3-year-old, then completely missed the next season and now makes 3rd start back on the comeback trail; made a move forward in that last one; makes first drit start, but has been firing bullets in the a.m. here. |
Belle of the Fleet |
Last seen knocking heads with course specialist On the Backstreets on the SA hill and paid the price for the early battle in the late going; this is where Talamo lands and the sophomore figures right in the mix under these conditions. |
Gracie Ragazza |
Moved forward from the first start to next at Del Mar last summer, then returned in May to pick it up another notch for the solid maidenbreaker in Arcadia; Talamo goes elsewhere, but no complaints with Kent, who won the opening-day Bertrando. |
Lindz Winz |
Her 8 career snapshots is tops in the field and she makes her third start off the March Hollendorfer claim; cuts back from a starter affair going once-around on the SA lawn and figures to drop into a nice stalking spot for new pilot Maldanado. |
Genuine Quality |
Drysdale representative made her United States debut in a grass miler at Golden Gate and forced the issue before giving way in the final sixteenth; first start on dirt, with English victory coming over the synthetic; make her a wildcard. |
Race 8
Irish Presence |
Last seen managing a distant show finish behind Let Faith Arise while long odds in the Adoration; thanksless spot behind Beholder in the previous try, but it's been a long time since this gal has had her picture taken; will have to come up with her best effort to reach. |
Miss Radiance |
Pupye's mare can do a little bit of everything, dirt and turf, short and long; two sprints under her belt now following the respite and she definitely has some races that would put her in the thick of things today under Tyler. |
Maker Or Breaker |
Empire Maker mare has always been well-regarded by the Baffert barn; looked sharp getting the job done in that sprint comebacker in May and that outing should set her up perfectly for this assignment; all systems go with 1:12 1/5 bullet drill in tow. |
Legacy |
Another who had a rather distant view of the finish in the Adoration, but she did pretty well in the previous Santa Lucia after being engaged by Eclipse Award-winning Beholder; if she takes to the track, she could be a major player with Talamo getting his first chance. |
Onna Bugeisha |
Has fired bullets in all 4 starts since joining the Gaines shedrow, teaming nicely in 3 of those with Espinoza at the controls; forced a moderate pace and drew off late last time as befits a 1-2 shot and this would seem to be a nice spot to build on that victory; respect. |
Race 9
Smokin Bomb |
This race comes up weak, but this guy is just 3-for-53 and has been dwelling at the bottom ranks here over the smaller night track without much sucess. |
Es Luna |
Returned from a lengthy vacation and was badly outrun in early March across town; there is a bullet half-mile showing over this track for optimists. |
Forever Freedom |
What jumps off the page is that last running line where he chased home Soi Phet, who crushed in the opening day Bertando here; could not have found a much easier spot to turn things around for Caeser, who also posed on the first program here. |
Cuneo |
Demolished rivals two back for Pender, then did a crash-and-burn at 6-5 for the new connections and was promptly taken back by Mike; If the April 20 or January 18 version shows up, he'll obviously be very tough to handle. |
Atascaderan |
Picked up his 2nd snapshot two weeks ago over the smaller night track here while doing his work for the lowest tag offered; at least he appears to be headed in the right direction. |
It's Superman |
Efforts since coming back from a lengthy vacation have been very poor; pass. |
Bright Ocean |
Took a huge drop in class last time and stopped badly; interestingly, he was claimed by Aguirre, who put the saddle on him for the April 19 lawn effort; guessing game. |
Southern Digs |
After knocking on the door, he put it all together two back on the Golden Gate turf when he ended up on the right end of a nose photo; nothing doing last time, now dips in class and moves to the dirt; tricky post to consider. |
