For the second consecutive week, Los Alamitos has canceled its Saturday evening program for Quarter Horses and lower-level Thoroughbreds because of a lack of entries.
The track did not race as scheduled on June 20.
Los Alamitos is currently in the midst of a three-week daytime Thoroughbred meeting from Fridays through Sundays that draws some runners that would be entered for Thoroughbred races on evening programs.
The announcement regarding the cancellation of Saturday’s evening program was made on Wednesday afternoon, the day entries were scheduled to be taken.
A Sunday evening program is scheduled this weekend that will include the prestigious Vessels Maturity for Quarter Horses at 400 yards and a carryover of $38,393 in the $2 pick six. The new money in Sunday’s pick six may surpass $150,000.
The current Thoroughbred meeting ends on July 5. On that weekend, Los Alamitos will run an evening program on July 5 with time trials for Quarter Horses in the Governor’s Cup Derby and Futurity. The track has previously announced it did not plan to race on the evening of July 4.
Average field sizes at the current evening meeting have shown declines this year, mirroring a national trend. Through Sunday, the evening meeting has had an average of 6.47 runners in 367 races compared to an average of 6.66 runners in 446 races for a similar time frame last year.
