Los Alamitos cancels Saturday card following heavy rain

Los Alamitos has cancelled a nine-race program for Saturday evening following steady rain that fell Saturday morning and was expected to continue through the day.

The decision was made shortly after noon.

“There is still some rain in the forecast,” track spokesman Orlando Gutierrez said. “We’ve had a nice steady rain.”

Racing is scheduled for Sunday with a nine-race program to begin at 5 p.m. Pacific. The Sunday program will include a carryover of $29,854 in the $2 pick six from Jan. 14.

As of 3 p.m. Pacific on Saturday, the area around Los Alamitos had received approximately a half-inch of rain, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Santa Anita, located 30 miles from Los Alamitos, began its Saturday afternoon program in light rain. The track had received considerably less rain than Los Alamitos by midday.

California tracks have been discouraged from racing amid severe weather in recent years after a series of high-profile fatalities at Santa Anita in early 2019.
