Lorena finds milder temps to her liking in Zadracarta Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Lorena simply wasn’t herself in the heat of the summer, and a cooler day on Sunday at Woodbine proved to be ideal for her when she won the $100,800 Zadracarta Stakes over upstart Stormy Silence.
Unbeaten in two starts, Stormy Silence was the 5-2 favorite in the five-furlong inner-turf dash for Ontario-bred fillies and mares. She tracked the leading Marie MacKay through the turn as Lorena raced in third after breaking from post 9.
Stormy Silence collared Marie MacKay at the sixteenth pole to assume command, but Lorena kicked in strongly during the final furlong to score by a half-length, in a time of :57.29. Marie MacKay held on for third in the 10-horse field.
The recently inducted Canadian Hall-of-Famer Gary Boulanger rode Lorena for trainer Stuart Simon.
“Going into this race, she trained like her old self,” Boulanger said. “Stu said to just let her dance. If she’s up front, she is - if she’s just off it, that’s fine. She showed the (real) Lorena today. When she turns for home, she’s got a big kick. I was pretty confident in the middle of the turn.”
A daughter of Souper Speedy, Lorena ($13.70) banked $60,000 in her fifth restricted stakes victory for the partnership of Simon, Kai Olguin, and Brent and Russell McLellan.
