Lord Shanakill held on gamely to win a Group 1 mile, the $556,000 Prix Jean Prat for 3-year-olds at Chantilly on Sunday, defeating Oiseau de Feu by a head. Lord Shanakill, a Kentucky-bred son of Speightstown trained in England by Karl Burke and ridden by Jim Crowley, was never worse than second, leading at the quarter pole while getting the mile in 1:38.90 on good ground. It was a half-length farther back to German 2000 Guineas winner Irian, with the 2-1 favorite Westphalia fifth, his chances ruined as he was never able to settle. Sent off at 6-1, Lord Shanakill had been just 1 3/4 lengths third behind Mastercraftsman in the St. James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Burke said that he would try him next against older horses in either the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 29 or the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Aug. 16. In the 1 1/8-mile, Group 3 Prix Chloe, the Mikel Delzangles-trained Wilside scored a head decision over One Clever Cat at 9-2, while Beverly D. nominees Denomination and Providanza were a neck and three-quarters of a length farther back in third and fourth. * Wiener Walzer was the winner of the $696,000 German Derby at Hamburg on Sunday. Ridden by Frederick Johansson and trained by Jens Hirschberger, the 7-2 Dynaformer colt prevailed by 1 1/4 lengths over Sordino while traveling the 1 1/2 miles on good ground in 2:29.56.
