Lord Rosberg a short price in CTHS Sales Stakes
VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The local Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s annual yearling and mixed sale is just around the corner Sept. 9. Serving as an advertisement for the sale are four $50,000 stakes races at Hastings on Monday that are restricted to Canadian-breds who went through a CTHS sale.
The first race on the eight-race card that begins at 1:50 p.m. Pacific is the 2-year-old colts-and-geldings division, in which Lord Rosberg figures to be heavily favored to win the 6 1/2-furlong sprint, which drew six horses. The Pat Jarvis trainee is the only horse in the field with a win going around two turns, and he was very impressive, romping by 4 1/2 lengths when he debuted in a maiden special weight race going about six furlongs Aug. 18.
Irish Lyric, a half-sister to Lord Rosberg, should take the bulk of the wagering in the 3-year-old fillies’ division. The 1 1/16-mile race drew five horses and goes as the second half of the early daily double. Trained by Paty Leaney, Irish Lyric is coming off a third-place finish in the B.C. Cup Dogwood, and the winner, Dawselina, came back to beat open company in the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
More interesting are the races for 2-year-old fillies and 3-year-old colts and geldings. The 6 1/2-furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies drew eight horses and features a rematch between Quatre Cat and Finality’s Charmer, who finished a nose apart in the $50,000 B.C. Cup Debutante.
Finality’s Charmer was on the wrong end of the photo, but trainer Craig MacPherson likes her chances Monday.
“It was her first time going 6 1/2 furlongs, and she got a lot out of the race,” said MacPherson. “She came back with a great work, and I just think she is going to take a big step forward.”
Trainer Carl Lausten likes the way Wonder World is coming into the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old colts and geldings. He is coming off a third-place finish behind Distillery in an unrestricted allowance race Aug. 3.
“He’s a slow learner, but he is starting to come around,” said Lausten. “He’s improved quite a bit since his last race, and I really liked the way he worked last week.”
Lausten was referring to Wonder World’s half-mile move in 48.80 seconds with Keshan Balgobin aboard last Monday. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.40.
CTHS Sales Stakes (2-year-old fillies), Race 6
KEY CONTENDERS
Quatre Cat (Last 2 Beyers: 60-50)
◗ Trained by Sylvea Gregory, she overcame a lot of trouble to win her debut and was a very game winner over Finality’s Charmer in the Debutante.
Finality's Charmer (Last 2 Beyers: 60-64)
◗ After dropping back in midstretch, she fought back to narrowly lose to Quatre Cat in her first try going around two turns.
Remarkable Lady
◗ A first-time starter trained by Patty Leaney, she has impressed the local clockers with a string of sharp workouts. She will be ridden by leading rider Amadeo Perez, who was aboard for her handy six-furlong move in 1:13 on Aug. 24.
CTHS Sales Stakes (3-year-old males) Race 7
KEY CONTENDERS
Wonder World (Last 3 Beyers: 69-65-62)
◗ He improved when he stretched out to a middle distance two back and should feast on what figures to be a hotly contested pace.
Aspen Getaway (Last 3 Beyers: 64-69-72)
◗ The only stakes winner in the field is the class of the field but is a bit questionable at the distance. Trained by Anita Bolton, he finished fourth when he tried a middle distance for the first time in the same race that Wonder World exits.
◗ DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Since 2013, Bolton has won with 40 percent of her starters in non-graded stakes at Hastings.
