Lord Rosberg brings good form into Jack Diamond Futurity

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Lord Rosberg looks like the one to catch and beat in the $100,000 Jack Diamond Futurity on Sunday at Hastings. The 6 1/2-furlong sprint for 2-year-old males foaled in Canada attracted eight horses and goes as race 6 on an eight-race card that begins at 1:50 p.m. Pacific.
Sharing top billing is the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity for 2-year-old fillies foaled in Canada. Finality’s Charmer and Quatre Cat appear to stand out in that nine-horse field.
Trained by Pat Jarvis, Lord Rosberg broke alertly and never looked back in both of his starts, including a 3 1/2-length romp in the $50,000 CTHS Sales Stakes on Sept. 1, when jockey Richard Hamel appeared to have him in hand most of the way. He certainly has the pedigree to be a decent horse. On the same day that he won the Sales Stakes, his half-sister Irish Lyric won the 1 1/16-mile CTHS Sales Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. She proved her win was no fluke when she came back to finish second by a head in the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks on Sept. 14.
Lord Rosberg followed up on his facile win with an easy five-furlong move in 1:03.60 last Sunday, and according to Jarvis, the son of Rosberg is coming into the race in excellent shape.
“He’s great,” she said. “He’s fit, and we know he’s fast, so we just gave him something to do to keep him happy when we worked him last weekend.”
JACK DIAMOND FUTURITY (RACE 6)
KEY CONTENDERS
Lord Rosberg (Last 2 Beyers: 61-55)
◗ He couldn’t have won the CTHS Sales Stakes much more easily, and he drew post 2, where Hamel should be able to put him on the lead if he breaks alertly.
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Over the past two years, Jarvis has a 50 percent strike rate (3 for 6) with 2-year-olds running in non-graded stakes races.

Sedin (Last Beyer: 59)
◗ He won his only start going 3 1/2 furlongs despite not breaking very well with Keishan Balgobin aboard. Trained by Toni Cloutier, he was on his toes when he worked a bullet five furlongs in 59.60 seconds Sept. 11.
Forestry’s Devil (Last 3 Beyers: 53-45-35)
◗ He rallied to finish second in the B.C. Cup Nursery and the CTHS Sales Stakes for leading trainer Craig MacPherson. He could pick up the pieces if Lord Rosberg and Sedin hook up early.
SADIE DIAMOND FUTURITY (RACE 7)
KEY CONTENDERS
Finality’s Charmer (Last 3 Beyers: 64-60-68)
◗ Trained by MacPherson, she is a nose away from being undefeated, and she took a big step forward in her second try in a two-turn sprint when she ran away and hid from Quatre Cat in the CTHS Sales Stakes.
◗ She is clearly the speed of the speed and could be gone if she breaks on top with Hamel aboard. MacPherson isn’t sure she needs to be on the lead in order to run a big race, though.
“She’s pretty fast, so she’ll probably be in front,” said MacPherson. “The pace scenario could be different than it was in the Sales Stakes, but I think she can stalk.”
Quatre Cat (Last 3 Beyers: 50-60-56)
◗ The Sylvea Gregory trainee overcame a horrific trip to win her maiden and then was a game winner over Finality’s Charmer in the B.C. Cup Debutante.
◗ She wasn’t a threat to Finality’s Charmer in the CTHS Sales Stakes, but she got stuck behind a moderate pace. With other potential speed, she could get a nice trip stalking what figures to be a quicker pace. Leading rider Amadeo Perez takes over for the injured Ryan Pacheco, who rode her in all three of her previous races.
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Over the past five years, Perez has won with 22 percent of his mounts for Gregory.
