Look Here upsets English Oaks at 33-1

The International Racing Bureau|Jun 06, 2008

Look Here led a one-two finish by extreme longshots when she drew clear to a 3 3/4-length victory over Moonstone in Friday's Group 1, $700,000 English Oaks at Epsom.

Ridden by Seb Sanders, the 33-1 Look Here rallied from seventh entering the stretch to take the lead with a little more than two furlongs remaining. Look Here drove clear and held off the efforts of two Irish fillies, 25-1 shot Moonstone and Katiyra, a 9-2 shot who finished third, 2 3/4 lengths behind the runner-up.

Lush Lashes, another Irish invader, finished fifth as the 5-2 favorite.

Look Here is owned by Julian Richmond-Watson, who is the senior steward of the British Horse Racing Authority.

Richmond-Watson bred Look Here, a daughter of Hernando, under the name of his Lawn Stud. She is trained by Ralph Beckett, younger brother of Teddy Grimthorpe, a racing manager for Juddmonte Farms, the first-year sponsor of the Oaks.

Beckett said it is unlikely he will run Look Here in the Irish Oaks, scheduled for July 13 at the Curragh.

Making only her third lifetime start, Look Here covered about 1 1/2 miles on good ground in 2:36.89.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien saddled six of the 16 runners in the Oaks. Aside from runner-up Moonstone, four of the others finished 13th through 16th.

Coronation Cup: O'Brien first and third

Earlier on the card, O'Brien took first and third in the Group 1 Coronation Cup with Soldier of Fortune and Macarthur.

Johnny Murtagh rode Soldier of Fortune to score by three-quarters of a length over Youmzain.

A son of Galileo, Soldier of Fortune, sent off at 9-4, ran about 1 1/2 miles in 2:36.83.

Getaway was favored at 5-4 on the strength of an impressive win in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on May 5. But trainer Andre Fabre was worried that his colt would not handle the track and Getaway faded to fifth after chasing early pacesetter Macarthur.

With his victory, Soldier of Fortune has supplanted Getaway as the early favorite for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on July 26.
