OLDSMAR, Fla. – When Crusader Kris ($94.20) outgamed 27-1 Musical Journey to take the nightcap Saturday and top a list of exotic-wager payoffs that included a $1,519.60 exacta, a $42,994.10 superfecta, and a $26,194.20 pick four, it was a fitting final act to a bizarre afternoon of racing that featured plenty of prizes and surprises. While there actually were three races in which the betting favorites won, there also were races full of stunning upsets, like the fourth race. In that six-furlong sprint, 52-1 longshot Run Robby Run ran down 18-1 Fairy Show, with 30-1 outsider Lucky Place finishing third and 8-1 Mr J winding up fourth to complete a superfecta that paid $114,380.30 had a $1 ticket been sold. It would appear that there were four 10-cent winners worth $11,438 each. In the third race, Vespertini led all the way to stun his rivals in the 2-year-old optional-claiming tilt on turf, returning $64.80. William “Radio” Downing trained the winner, owned by Jud Van Worp, from the family that campaigned Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Not Surprising. Even though the strong favorite Froggyville ($4.40) held off Ultrapassando by a head to win the sixth race, the early pick four paid a whopping $38,757.40. The longshot parade continued in the seventh race, where Striking Hight ($22) outgamed 50-1 shot Pyrite Personal by a nose to give leading trainer David Hinsley his fourth win of the meeting. That exacta paid a paltry $667.20. Victor Lebron posted a riding double on the program, including a rousing ride aboard One Touch ($19.40) in the featured ninth race for trainer Wayne Mogge. That raised his win total for the meeting to five, and he looks to be riding in top form. Leading rider Antonio Gallardo also had a winner on the program to give him 16 victories at the meeting. New face on paddock show Andrew Demsky is the new host for Tampa Bay Downs’s “Paddock Preview” show and brings a refreshing, energetic approach to the post held by Margo Flynn for 20 years. With Flynn concentrating more on the corporate and management side of the business as vice president of marketing and publicity, Demsky was brought in to give analysis and selections for each race prior to the horses leaving the paddock for the post parade. The 27-year-old, who grew up not far from Belmont Park, has impressed many in his first days on the job with his racing acumen and ability to point out factors that separate contenders from pretenders. The new host has shown a talent for pointing out likely pace scenarios and looks at the complete picture for the key horses, pointing out such factors as sharp workouts and time between races. Regal pedigrees in maiden race The bloodlines of the eight 2-year-old fillies entered in Friday’s seventh race were among the strongest ever seen in a maiden race at Tampa Bay Downs. Four starters were full or half-sisters to Grade 1 winners. Heath, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, is a half-sister to Lea, the winner of the Grade 1 Donn Handicap and an earner of more than $709,000. Laid Back Lady’s half-brother The Groom Is Red won the Grade 1 Champagne and more than $400,000. Well Lived’s full brother Well Armed counted the Dubai World Cup and Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes among his wins for career earnings of more than $5.1 million, and Little Nellie, who won the race for trainer Todd Pletcher, is a half-sister to Zoftig, a winner of more than $400,000 and the Grade 1 Selene Stakes.
