Choctaw Chuck needed every inch of the Presque Isle Downs stretch to spring a big upset in the $100,000 Tom Ridge Stakes on Monday night.
After an awkward start, jockey Deshawn Parker sent the 3-year-old Kevin Rice trainee up the rail to reach a contending position just off the pace early. Choctaw Chuck swung out nearing the stretch and split horses at the top of the lane. Under strong urging, he was up in time to win by a head.
Cee 'n O, the 6-5 second choice in the eight-horse field, was second, a length in front of Jose Sea View, the beaten 11-10 favorite in third.
The running time for the six furlongs was 1.09.46 over the Presque Isle Tapeta track. Choctaw Chuck returned $55.80 to win.
