Longacres Mile tops 28 stakes at Emerald Downs
The 85th running of the Grade 3, $200,000 Longacres Mile headlines 28 stakes worth $1.51 million at Emerald Downs in 2020. The 63-day meet begins on April 18 and concludes Sept. 20.
The Mile, for 3-year-olds and up, is scheduled for Aug. 9. It is the earliest date ever for the Mile, the premier race in the Pacific Northwest. Last year’s Mile was a thriller with Law Abidin Citizen edging Anyportinastorm by a head following a stretch-long duel.
The Mile anchors the second annual Championship Sunday. Supporting races are the Emerald Distaff, Muckleshoot Derby and Washington Oaks. The three races are each worth $50,000.
July 12 will feature four stakes races headed by the Mt. Rainier for 3-year-olds and up. The mile and a sixteenth Mt. Rainer is the final local prep for the Mile. Bolstering the card are the $50,000 Boeing Stakes for fillies and mares, $50,000 King Country Express for 2-year-old colts and geldings, and the $50,000 Angie C for 2-year-old fillies.
Next to the Mile, the $80,000 Gottstein Futurity is the richest race at the meet. The mile and a sixteenth race for 2-year-olds is the closing-day feature.
The Washington Cup comprises six $50,000 stakes, with the juvenile races for horses bred or sired in Washington, and the other races for horses bred or sired in Washington or British Columbia. The Cup races will be spread over three days beginning on Aug. 30 with the Washington Cup Sophomore Filly and Sophomore Colt and Gelding. The Juvenile Filly and Juvenile Colt and Gelding are on Sept. 6, with the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic and the Filly and Mare on Sept. 13.
