Long Range Toddy holds off Big and Classy in Edwin T. Broome Stakes

Long Range Toddy held off a surging Big and Classy for a length win in the $60,000 Edwin T. Broome on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
The horses were co-highweighted at 123 pounds for the overnight handicap. Big and Classy was the even-money favorite after winning seven of his last eight starts at Gulfstream.
Long Range Toddy ($7) made it two in a row at the meet when he broke on top and set fractions of 24.19 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.82 for the half-mile and 1:10.87 for six furlongs. He had more on the late stages as Big and Classy rallied, with the winner covering the one-turn mile on a fast track in 1:35.84.
Emisael Jaramillo was aboard Long Range Toddy for trainer Victor Barboza Jr.
The Skipper Too finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Big and Classy.
Long Range Toddy is a son of Take Charge Indy who came into the Edwin T. Broome off an allowance win July 16 at Gulfstream. He is owned by Zenith Racing. Long Range Toddy has now won 6 of 38 starts for earnings of more than $1.2 million.
