ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Even the losers get lucky sometimes, and the longtime maiden Bee Me may have found a field that he can beat in Friday’s sixth race at Woodbine, a 6 1/2-furlong Tapeta sprint for Ontario-sired and $40,000 maidens. Bee Me failed to crack the top two in eight starts last year at 3 while ending up third three times. The son of Bee Jersey has been much improved this year, during which he’s filled out the exacta behind a next-out winner thrice. Bee Me nearly broke through in his May 24 season opener when finishing a close second after giving it a big speed try. His newfound early foot wasn’t as effective two weeks later when he faded to fourth, but he rebounded July 6 when a stalking second to the debuting Ciunas, who returned to beat Ontario-sired nonwinners of two on the grass. A dropping Souper Tuscan left Bee Me back in second on Aug. 10. That rival subsequently won a $50,000 starter allowance at Saratoga with an 81 Beyer Speed Figure. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Munger and Cole are a combined 4 for 21 at the meet. Signature Sir and Pocket Speed wound up third and fourth, respectively, in Bee Me’s last outing. Among them, Pocket Speed figures to have the most upside. He had a four-wide trip in that race, which marked his debut, before finishing 3 3/4 lengths in arrears. The addition of Lasix is a plus, but his high-percentage trainer, Ron Sadler, has been shut out with 11 maiden second-time starters over the past five years. After closing inside, Signature Sir finished just a head behind Bee Me while ending up a head in front of Pocket Speed. That was his first race off a $25,000 claim by trainer Darwin Banach, who’s won at an 8 percent clip second time off a claim during the last five years, with a rather low return on investment. Paynes Spirit is making his first start for trainer Julia Carey, who’s won at an excellent 29 percent with new acquisitions over the past five years, with an ROI of $2.93. The son of Shaman Ghost ran fourth in his first two outings this summer before a 10-length loss most recently on the main turf. Padraig and Strawberry Again are both debuting with blinkers. Padraig is by Queen’s Plate victor Shaman Ghost, who has sired a low 4 percent of debut winners. Padraig’s dam dropped four winners, including stakes-placed Aye Aye Sir, who earned more than $250,000. Strawberry Again’s sire, Prime Direction, was shut out with four first-time starters. The homebred is the first foal from a maiden-claiming turf sprint winner. Trainer Ted Holder, who won two races last Sunday, has decent debut numbers. Rounding out the field is Souper Strider, who’s adding blinkers off his dull seasonal bow. Post time for the eight-race card is 4:30 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
