Long Hot Summer may make jump to graded stakes soon

DEL MAR, Calif. – Long Hot Summer, unbeaten in two starts after winning her stakes debut in Wednesday’s $150,500 Generous Portion Stakes for 2-year-old California-bred fillies, may not stay in the statebred division for long this fall.
On Thursday, trainer Phil D’Amato said she could run in the $200,000 Golden State Juvenile for fillies over seven furlongs Oct. 31 at Santa Anita, but he is anxious to try her in graded stakes.
“We definitely have a filly with a lot of potential,” he said. “Her training will tell us what to do. We won’t do any serious training until we get to Santa Anita.”
Long Hot Summer ($12.40) won the six-furlong Generous Portion by three-quarters of a length over My Fiona, the winner of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Stakes in July. Joe Talamo rode Long Hot Summer, who was timed in 1:10.94.
Long Hot Summer was the $260,000 sale-topper at the Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training. By Street Boss, Long Hot Summer races for Anthony Fanticola and Joe Scardino. The filly won her debut against California-bred maiden fillies over 5 1/2 furlongs Aug. 9.
