Lone Star stakes winners to try Saratoga

Promise Me Silver and Bling On the Music are both being pointed for stakes at Saratoga after dominant wins last weekend at Lone Star Park.

Promise Me Silver was a seven-length winner of the $50,000 Valor Farm Stakes for Texas-bred fillies and mares July 9, covering six furlongs in 1:10.20. She shipped Thursday to Kentucky and from there will travel to Saratoga, said trainer Bret Calhoun.

Promise Me Silver, who races for her breeders, Robert and Myrna Luttrell, will target the $100,000 Shine Again, a seven-furlong race for fillies and mares Aug. 3.

Promise Me Silver earned a career-high 93 Beyer Speed Figure in the Valor Farm. The victory was her second straight, following an allowance score May 20 at Louisiana Downs. The starts were her first since an uncharacteristic 10th-place finish in last year’s Prioress at Saratoga.

“Those two races have served their purpose in getting a real good bottom in her, a real good fitness level, and getting her confidence back up,” Calhoun said. “She’s always shown the ability but ended up on a down note last year and needed the confidence. I think she proved as a young horse she can run with these kind, and now we’ll find out if she’s back to that level and can compete with these horses as an older horse.”

Promise Me Silver won the first eight races of her career, topped by the Grade 3 Eight Belles at Churchill Downs.

Bling On the Music is now undefeated in two starts with her 8 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 fillies’ division of the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity at Lone Star. She won her debut by 4 3/4 lengths May 19 at Lone Star.

Bling On the Music earned a career-high 88 Beyer in the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity. She covered five-eighths in 58.11 seconds, a time that was quicker than the colts-and-geldings division two races later.

“She broke from the 1 hole and handled all the pressure, and when called on, she drew off,” said J.R. Caldwell, who trains Bling On the Music for Keene Thoroughbreds.

Caldwell said Bling On the Music will start in either the Grade 2, $200,000 Adirondack on Aug. 13 or the Grade 1, $350,000 Spinaway on Sept. 3. He said stronger consideration is being given to the Spinaway because it is a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Caldwell will be based at Remington Park in Oklahoma City following the close of the Lone Star meet on Sunday.

◗ Supermason, who won the first and last stakes of the Lone Star meet, will be freshened before gearing up for a fall campaign, said trainer Calhoun. Supermason won the Premiere Stakes on opening night, then captured the Assault on July 9. It was the 250th stakes win for Calhoun. Supermason also set a course record when he won a turf allowance at the Lone Star meet.

Calhoun said a long-range goal for Supermason is the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame Stakes on turf Oct. 29 at Retama Park.

◗ Lone Star Park has requested a 50-date Thoroughbred meet for 2017, which would include later opening and closing dates than this year’s meet. Lone Star has asked the Texas Racing Commission to start next year’s season on April 20. The meet would run through July 30. This year, Lone Star opened April 7 and closes on Sunday. The track also is seeking a 26-date meet for Quarter Horses next year, from Sept. 15 to Nov. 11.

After Sunday, Lone Star will operate as a training center. Lone Star opens this year’s Quarter Horse meet on Sept. 16.
