Lone Star: Favorite goes from last to first

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - La Martina was in a drive to the wire to win her third career stakes race in the $125,000 Walmac Lone Star Oaks at Lone Star Park. It was three-quarters of length back in second to Dyna Penny, who finished a half-length clear of third-place finisher Academic Angel.

La Martina ($3) trailed the field in the early stages of the 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies while Manzottina led through an opening half-mile in 50.91 seconds. La Martina commenced a strong rally on the final turn, and went on to cover the distance over a yielding course in 1:48.91.

Jockey Corey Lanerie rode La Martina for trainer Jenine Sahadi. The filly earned $75,000 for the win, her fourth in nine career starts, and with the first-place check boosted her earnings to $186,175. La Martina is owned by Team Valor Stables and Gary Barber.

La Martina other stakes wins are the $50,000 Hidden Light at Santa Anita and the $55,000 California Oaks at Golden Gate Fields.
