Lokinforpursemonee springs 14-1 surprise in Woodstock

Lokinforpursemonee wins the 2016 Victoria Stakes
Michael Burns Lokinforpursemonee launches his winning bid from off the pace under Luis Contreras in the Woodstock for 3-year-old sprinters.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario—The aptly named Lokinforpursemonee came charging on the outside from far back to post a 14-1 upset in Saturday’s $115,800 Woodstock Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday.

Lokinforpursemonee rated kindly for Luis Contreras in the six-furlong sprint, as Yorkton set a lively pace while being pressed by Marten River. The favored Uncle B loomed boldly entering the stretch, but was out-finished by a flying Lokinforpursemonee, who prevailed by 1 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:09.16.

Uncle B beat out tiring Yorkton by a half-length for second. Sailing Home finished fourth and was followed by Marten River, Woodbridge, First Goal, and Night Watchman.

“I got a perfect trip,” said Contreras. “He broke really good, and I was just sitting nice and comfortable, waiting to make my move. He had a tremendous kick from the three-eighths to the wire.”

Lokinforpursemonee, a powerful-looking son of Silent Name, earned $72,000 for owner/trainer John Ross.

“He was the highest earner, and carried the highest weight, 123 pounds,” Ross pointed out. “He beat some nice 3-year-olds here. I’m so proud of this horse. The way Luis rode him today--that was our plan, to let the speed go.”
