Llanarmon mows them down in Carotene Stakes

Ron Gierkink|Oct 13, 2014

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Llanarmon overcame a slow start to the win the $150,000 Carotene Stakes going away under Emma-Jayne Wilson on holiday Monday at Woodbine.

Llanarmon gave the others about a five-length head start in the nine-furlong turf route before saving ground in seventh on the backstretch. Wilson angled her wide for the drive, and she mowed down the leaders nearing the eighth pole en route to a 2 1/4-length tally in 1:49.21 over the firm ground.

Final Redemption, the even-money favorite from Maryland, wound up second after pressing an honest pace set by Zazinga, who faded to fourth. Finn’s Jewel closed for third in the eight-horse field of Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies.

“She’s gotten into the habit of taking a little more time to get into gear,” said Wilson. “I just let her be happy and comfortable. I was pretty confident that she was going to run them down.”

Llanarmon ($16) earned $90,000 for Harlequin Ranches and Roger Attfield, who trained Carotene, Canada’s champion turf runner from 1986-88.
