Little Lolitta topweight in Jenkins
CALGARY, Alberta - Little Lolitta, Alberta's champion 3-year-old filly of 2001, heads a solid field of seven older fillies and mares in the $40,000 M.R. Jenkins Memorial Handicap here Sunday.
Trainer Don Gilkyson sent out Little Lolitta to five victories last year, for earnings of $115,911 to claim her division title.
A daughter of Regal Remark, Little Lolitta comes into Sunday's feature without benefit of a tightener, but Gilkyson has prepared her with a series of strong works including a pair of bullet five-furlong moves.
Perry Winters replaces Ron Blinston aboard Little Lolitta, who is the 119-pound highweight in the six-furlong feature.
Blinston will ride the speedy Brighton Belle, who faded to third in the Jenkins prep April 21 after setting sizzling fractions.
Tecate won that six-furlong race by coming from last in a field of four. Rider Richard Hamel will likely use the same strategy Sunday.
Brighton Belle drew the rail and will be away and winging, a style that carried her to three stakes victories as a 3-year-old last year.
Little Lolitta, whose best races have come from just off the pace, should use a stalking trip that will allow Winters to take the first run at the speed. She drew post 5 and breaks just inside of her stablemate, Slewability.
Golden Remark, a 6-year-old from trainer Floyd Arthur's shed row, drew the outside post and makes her 2002 bow with leading rider Quincy Welch up.
A multiple stakes winner, Golden Remark runs well fresh, and would appreciate rapid early fractions to complement her late-running style.
