Lone Star Park

Little Best Man goes dirt to turf for Broberg in Tuesday allowance

Mary Rampellini|Jul 03, 2020

Best Little Man could go favored Tuesday when he makes his turf debut against grass specialist Disinclined in the featured eighth race at Lone Star Park.

The first-level allowance over a mile and a sixteenth on turf is restricted to 3-year-olds and up bred in Texas.

Best Little Man is part of an eight-horse field that also includes Algebra, who is making a rare appearance on the grass, and He’s a Suitor, a promising sort for trainer Bret Calhoun.

KEY CONTENDERS
Best Little Man, by Captain Countdown
Last 3 Beyers: 65-49-47

* He makes the move to turf for a multiple stakes-winning stallion who made five starts on the grass and finished second and third in his best efforts. Captain Countdown is getting 6 percent winners from his first-time turfers and 10 percent winners overall on the grass.

* Karl Broberg, who owns and trains Best Little Man, wins at a 14-percent rate with his first-time turf prospects and at a 19-percent clip with runners going dirt to turf, according to statistics from Daily Racing Form. Overall, Broberg wins turf races at a 21-percent rate.

* Best Little Man comes into Tuesday’s race off a runner-up finish in a first-level allowance for statebreds at a mile on the main track June 28 at Lone Star. He was beaten a head and the Beyer Speed Figure of 65 that he earned is the best last-race number in the field Tuesday.

* David Cabrera has the mount from the rail on the horse, who could prove to be the controlling speed Tuesday.

Disinclined, by Valid Expectations
Last 3 Beyers: 62-52-60

* He is a proven turf horse. Disinclined won his maiden on the grass and his three runner-up finishes have all been on turf. His latest came in his last start, when he was second at this same level March 10 at Sam Houston.

* Disinclined will break from post 5, under Stewart Elliott. He could get a stalking trip behind both Best Little Man and the sprint-to-route prospects He’s a Suitor and Queen’sredboy.

* Mindy Willis trains Disinclined for the horse’s breeder, Brant Schafer.

Algebra, by Algorithms
Last 3 Beyers: 58-62-45

* He exits the same first-level allowance as Best Little Man. He finished third in the main track route. Algebra is moving back to turf, where in his lone start on the surface he was third in a maiden special weight in March at Sam Houston.

* Lane Luzzi has the mount from post 3 for Blackhorse Farm and trainer Danny Pish.
