Litfin’s preview: Wide-open feature on Day 2

Dave Litfin|Oct 29, 2014

Seven fillies and mares go in the Day 2 feature, a $69,000 optional claimer with second-level allowance conditions that goes as race 7.

Several contenders should be happy to get back to Aqueduct, none more so than Expression, who has notched all six of her career victories at the Ozone Park oval, including five on the inner dirt. She’s earned more than $250,000 since owner-trainer Charlie Baker claimed her from a maiden win in January 2012.

Voodoo Tales won and placed in two starts over the main track last November and gets some class relief after chasing Classic Point off a three-month layoff in the Punkin Pie Stakes.

Laguna Girl figures to supply some pace as she seeks her first win since wiring the restricted Are We Dreamin Stakes on the inner dirt last December.

$1 million babies

Aldrin and Gold Shield, who each sold at Keeneland for $1 million, clash in the opener, a one-mile maiden special weight for 2-year-olds.

Both pricey colts were beaten double-digit lengths when seventh in their Saratoga debuts, but improved substantially for runner-up finishes at Belmont in their second starts.

Frosted also moved forward in his second start and figures close along with entrymate Tradesman in a potential key race.

Good spot for newbie

First-time starters Fit to Keep and Convert have found a soft spot to begin their careers in race 2, a $40,000 maiden claimer for New York-breds, where Golden Luck boasts the top dirt Beyer Speed Figure of 31.

The alternatives appear to be False Positive and Fleeting, who make the turf-to-dirt switch along with a drop from special weight company; and Space Cowboys who showed speed in a turf sprint first time out and stopped after that in a sloppy off-the-grass sprint.

Pick six carryover

Nobody came up with all six winners on opening day, resulting in a pick six carryover of $12,398.

With an eight-race card on tap again Thursday, the pick six begins with race 3 at 2 p.m. Eastern.

First post remains at 1 p.m. through Saturday, before reverting to 12:20 with the time change.
