Litfin's preview: Pick six carryover of $37,032
Wednesday, Sept. 10, preview
Thanks mostly to Raglin River’s shocking win at 55-1 in Sunday’s seventh race, there is a pick six carryover of $37,032 as the first full week of the fall meet gets under way.
The pick six begins with race 4 at 2:38 p.m. Eastern, and bettors will have to navigate through two “buried” maiden races for 2-year-olds. Race 6 is a turf sprint where three of the four first-time starters have recorded at least one bullet workout, and there are seven first-timers in race 9, a $40,000 claiming sprint on dirt for New York-bred fillies.
FIRST-TIME GELDINGS
In race 2, Lemon Maker, fourth in a sloppy, off-the-turf dash at Penn National in his only start this year July 3, has been gelded and tries 1 1/16 miles on grass for new trainer Mike Trombetta. A 337 Tomlinson rating suggests that he may move up off his nondescript dirt form.
In race 6, Black Friday Rush also has been gelded for his first start since being unveiled on a wet track here July 3. He also is switching to turf with a suitable Tomlinson rating (325) for Joe Orseno – who lit up the tote board with Raglin River in a turf sprint here Sunday.
LA MADRINA HEADS FEATURE
La Madrina, who overcame a lengthy delay in the paddock to get through her first-level allowance condition at Saratoga for Shug McGaughey, heads a field of five betting interests in race 3, an optional claimer with secondary allowance conditions.
La Madrina is a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner Verrazano and Grade 2 winner El Padrino, and the gray Tapit filly is the lone 3-year-old in a compact group that includes the Charlie Baker-trained entry of Expression and Make the Moment.
Evening Show makes her third start back from a lengthy layoff for Steve Klesaris and could pose the main challenge from the rail.
