Litfin: Pick three play at Saratoga for Saturday, Aug. 29
I would love to make a play on the $1 million guaranteed pick four, but it’s very tough to get past Flintshire and American Pharoah in the last two legs.
Instead, we’ll take a crack at the all-seven furlong pick three comprising the Ballerina (7th), King’s Bishop (8th) and Forego (9th), all of which are competitive on paper.
BALLERINA: La Verdad (2) is in front as far as she goes, but the seventh furlong is a stretch for her. Merry Meadow (3) and Dame Dorothy (6) have solid pace-pressing credentials, and Unbridled Forever (7) displayed a strong late kick to win her seasonal debut in the Shine Again.
KING’S BISHOP: When an unbeaten horse coming off a track-record performance is 30-1 on the morning line, you know this is a super-competitive field, but we’ve got to include Limousine Liberal (6) off a trouble-filled debut win at Churchill Downs, and a sizzling allowance win in a record 1:07.89 at Ellis Park. We’re casting a wide net and also using Competitive Edge (3), Watershed (4), Mr. Z (5), Holy Boss (7), and March (10).
FOREGO: A lot of folks will try to get by using just The Big Beast (5) and Private Zone (7), but Race Day (1), and Salutos Amigos (10) match up well on their best efforts this season.
The $96 ticket: 2, 3, 6, 7 with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 with 1, 5, 7, 10
