Litfin: Belmont pick five for Sunday, Sept. 27
Since we’re feeling adventurous, let’s strategize a play for Sunday’s pick five at the Big B.
Race 1 – SUPER SURPRISE (2) and FROSTY MARGARITA (3) will vie for favoritism in the Joseph A. Gimma, while SURPRISE CAMEO (4) has a chance to control the early pace.
A – 2, 3
B – 4
Race 2 – CONGENIAL (2) may be sitting on a good effort as he returns to a chute start, while MONEYINYOUR POCKET (7) has already beaten several members of the field at all three NYRA venues. This may not be the day to totally give up on CEASE (5), as Eddie Barker has done some nice work claiming older veterans.
A – 2, 7
B – 5
Race 3 – While SUDDEN SURPRISE (4) and CHAMPIONOFTHENILE (5) boast the fastest Beyer Speed Figures in the Bertram F. Bongard, it’s possible they could hook up for the early lead, in which case a late run could be forthcoming from GET JETS (1) and/or MANIPULATED (2), who clearly have ability as well.
A – 4, 5
B – 1, 2
Race 4 – SISTER SOPHIA (2) and VICKI’S DANCER (3) look like the right ones in this turf sprint that should feature an honest pace. SWEETPOLLYPUREBRD (8) has never been better, though, and rates backup status.
A – 2, 3
B – 8
Race 5 – TRUE PLEASURE (6) may be going for the lead here, as she was much more of a pace factor than her last-race running line might suggest. LIBRETA (3) is first-time Lasix for live connections. CASTOR (8) figures to improve second time out, as does J R STAR (5). Get the feeling any among WICKED ONE (1), GOLD MEDALIAST (2), MOOD SWING (4), and SMILE BIG (7) could take some money first out.
A – 6, 8
B – 3, 5
C – 1, 2, 4, 7
