Literate tallied her second consecutive stakes victory at Turfway Park in dominant fashion on Saturday night, rolling to a 10 3/4-length score in the $125,000 Wintergreen Stakes and earning a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 95. The late-running Literate ($2.94), sent away favored, got a solid setup in the Wintergreen, a one-mile race for fillies and mares. Wrigleyville wasn’t posting scorching fractions, but got pressure throughout with Stylish Sue on her hip through the opening stages, posting the half-mile in 46.87 seconds on the Tapeta. Literate, under Luan Machado, had been fifth after that opening half. She made a bid in the three-path around the turn, reeling in the leaders while moving easily. She took command in upper stretch, and from there, it was just a question of the winning margin as she quickly drew clear. Settling Storm, who was last in the field of seven after the opening quarter, came on to be clearly best of the rest, four lengths clear of third-place Devassa, who raced evenly and was outkicked late. The time for the mile was 1:38.42. Literate, a 6-year-old Oscar Performance mare trained by Brad Cox for C2 Racing Stable and BAG Racing Stables, has now won seven of 21 career starts for earnings of $447,117. Winner of the Grade 3 Trillium Stakes on Woodbine’s Tapeta last July while trained by Martin Drexler, she has thrived on Turfway’s Tapeta this winter for Cox. The mare was third in a strong edition of the My Charmer Stakes in December, then won the Likely Exchange Stakes on Jan. 10, and now, the Wintergreen. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
