ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Literate caught 3-5 favorite Caitlinhergrtness in the final strides to take the Grade 3, $159,300 Trillium Stakes under a fine ride from Sahin Civaci on Saturday at Woodbine. Veery and For Flying vied for the lead through honest fractions in the 1 1/16-mile test for fillies and mares, while last year’s King’s Plate winner Caitlinhergrtness tracked them in third. Caitlinhergrtness made a three-wide bid to hit the front inside the quarter pole, while Literate was mounting a rail rally from a trailing sixth. Civaci angled Literate into the three-path in midstretch before getting home on top by a half-length, in a time of 1:43.23. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! A daughter of Oscar Performance, Literate ($9.90) earned $90,000 in her first stakes score for C2 Racing Stable and Marty Drexler, who also trains Veery. “I figured that [Veery] was going to make an honest pace, one way or another,” Drexler said. “I figured that [Literate] was going to come running. As it turned out, she saved ground all the way. It was actually a great trip.” Literate got a little break after ending up fourth behind Caitlinhergrtness after taking the overland route in the Grade 3 Belle Mahone May 31. “I thought we had a little bit of a wide trip last time,” Drexler recalled. “She was coming into this race training even better than she did the last time. I take nothing away from [Caitlinhergrtness], but I really do think this is a good horse.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
