Listing game in California Cup Turf Sprint score

ARCADIA, Calif. – Listing won the second stakes of his career, and first on turf, in Saturday’s $100,351 California Cup Turf Sprint for 3-year-old statebreds at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Listing ($7) held off a sustained threat from 5-1 Takeo Squared to win by a neck, finishing about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:12.86. Listing earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 82.
Gutierrez had Listing in fourth for the first half-mile, racing within a length of the front, and took a narrow lead with a furlong remaining while racing wide.
Tivan, the 11-1 outsider in a field of six, closed from last to finish third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths. Irish Heatwave, who beat Listing by anose in an allowance race with a $50,000 claiming option for California-breds on turf on Jan. 1, finished fourth, followed by Our Silver Oak and Teacher’s Treasure.
Offshore Affair was withdrawn on Saturday morning.
Takeo Squared was pulled up on the backstretch and vanned to trainer Doug O’Neill’s stable because of concern over the condition of a foreleg, stewards said.
Listing, a colt by Square Eddie who races for Paul and Zillah Reddam and trainer Ben Cecil, was sent off favored on Saturday. A winner of 2 of 5 starts, Listing’s two wins have come in stakes. He won the I’m Smokin Stakes for statebred 2-year-olds at six furlongs on dirt at Del Mar on Aug. 31 in his career debut.
“It takes a certain type of horse to do that,” Cecil said.
Listing has earned $134,400.
