Listing ($46.40) debuts with upset win in I'm Smokin

Listing won his debut in Friday’s $100,000 I’m Smokin Stakes for California-breds at Del Mar in a 22-1 upset.
The most surprised person may have been winning rider Mario Gutierrez. The farther Listing progressed in the six-furlong race, the more Gutierrez felt confident about his chances.
“It set up perfectly,” Gutierrez said. “During the race, I thought he was running great. When he passed the half-mile pole, he was very comfortable. At the three-eighths pole, I thought I was sitting on a lot of horse.”
Listing ($46.40) closed from fourth in a field of eighth to win by 1 1-4 lengths in 1:11.63. Policy, the winner of a maiden special weight race on Aug. 19, closed from fifth to finish second, 2 1-4 lengths in front of Oliver.
Silken Prince, the 8-5 favorite, broke slowly and ran wide on the turn before finishing fourth. Bea’s Boy was fifth, followed by Irish Heatweave, Hey Sal, and Eighty Proof.
Listing was the only first-time starter in a field of eight and one of two maidens. Trained by Ben Cecil, Listing is owned by breeder Paul and Zillah Reddam.
The colt is by Square Eddie, the leading sire of 2-year-olds in California this year and the stallion’s ninth juvenile winner of the year. The Reddams own Square Eddie, who stands at Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsall, Calif., the former Vessels Stallion Farm.
