Lincoln: A wide-open President's Cup

Bill Hodtwalker|Jun 13, 2008

Winning streaks go on the line Sunday as a strong field of eight sprinters will meet in the $15,000 President's Cup Stakes going six furlongs at Lincoln.

Out Gamble has won four straight this year, Mr. Pinstripe three straight, while Frogman Henry and Whos Leaving Who bring two consecutive wins into this race. To muddle the picture, none of these may end up the favorite in this wide-open race.

Bevys Best, who had a four-race streak snapped in the Speed Stakes here on May 17, may well inherit the role of favorite. Bevys Best closed his 2007 campaign with consecutive stakes wins and opened up this year with wins in the Ogataul and Budweiser-Tondi Stakes at Fonner Park before his loss here.

The pace of this race will be the key point, with Bevys Best, Out Gamble, and Whos Leaving Who among the confirmed front-runners. With such a strong pace out front, the advantage may lie with stalkers Mr. Pinstripe, trained by Bill Isburg, and Frogman Henry, from the barn of Brian Roberts. Both should be positioned just off the leaders waiting to unleash their late runs.

Mr. Pinstripe has been claimed three times this year, starting out at the $7,500 level at Oaklawn in January, and was claimed again there in March for $10,000 off a winning effort. He then shipped up to Prairie Meadows, where he won against $10,000 claiming company and was taken by his current connections for $12,500 there on

May 24, again off a winning effort.

Frogman Henry has won for $20,000 and against optional claiming company at the same level in his last two starts including here on May 11.He has always run well on this surface and rates a very solid chance of getting the win here.
