Lincoln: High Dice back sprinting

Bill Hodtwalker|Jun 07, 2001

LINCOLN, Neb. - High Dice will carry highweight of 123 pounds when he faces four others in the $10,000 President's Cup Handicap at six furlongs Saturday evening.

Trained by Herb Riecken, High Dice is turning back in distance following a solid 4 3/4-length victory in the Big Red Mile here May 28. Before that, High Dice captured the Dowd Mile Handicap at Fonner Park while prepping for the Bosselman/Gus Fonner Handicap. He came up short in the Bosselman, making a bid on the far turn but fading to sixth in the stretch of the $100,000 race.

High Dice has been consistent throughout his career, as evidenced by his 3-3-3 mark from 13 starts and earnings of $63,401 a year ago. He is off to a good start again this year with earnings of $34,060 from five starts.

Doug's Shadow, trained by Julie Larmon, is making his second start of the year following a disappointing effort in the slop in the Speed Handicap here opening weekend. A year ago, Doug's Shadow was never worse than third in eight starts while racking up four wins. He scored stakes victories over this surface in the Speed Handicap and the Executive Board Handicap.

Hannah's Hero was named claimer of the year at Fonner Park this spring and rates a shot at the upset. Trained by Ricky Gustafson, Hannah's Hero scored over open $20,000 claiming company in his final start at Fonner Park, defeating crack older horses Skunktail and Citibid in the process.

Trainer Dan Coughlin sends out the uncoupled entry of Mr Zooha and Letthebigredroll. Mr Zooha checked in second in the Speed Handicap, beaten just over two lengths, while stablemate Letthebigredroll closed to finish third, another three-quarters of a length back.
