OZONE PARK, N.Y. – A favorable forecast void of rain but one with temperatures in the mid-70s should allow for the return of turf racing at Aqueduct, where five of the nine races Thursday are scheduled for the grass, all with overflow, competitive fields. Two first-level allowance races for New York-breds – one sprint for females and one route for males – highlight the card, which kicks off the final week of the Belmont at the Big A meet. The rails will be up at 36 feet on the outer turf and 27 feet on the inner course, which will limit field size to 10 runners on both courses. Race 5, to be run over the outer turf, is a six-furlong heat for fillies and mares that drew 15 runners for turf plus one main-track-only entrant. Linarite, a 4-year-old daughter of Mineshaft, has shown some improvement over her last two starts, a third in this condition going 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga and a fourth, beaten just 1 3/4 lengths, in a starter allowance here Oct. 6. In the Saratoga race, Linarite found herself behind horses turning into the lane and then had to tip wide and was late changing leads when beaten two lengths by Kerry, who came back to win her next allowance condition. Sikum, the runner-up from that race, came back to win this condition here Oct. 8. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. In her Oct. 6 race, Linarite couldn’t catch a loose-on-the-lead Lady Mia, who was a Group 2 stakes-placed runner in Europe before coming the United States for trainer Christophe Clement. In this race, Clement has an interesting runner in Autumn Glory, who returns from a 15-month layoff where she beaten 2 1/2 lengths going seven furlongs at Belmont. Clement said that Autumn Glory was laid off for so long due to soreness in her back. Clement said Autumn Glory is more of a miler and he is using this spot to get the filly started. A potentially interesting longshot in here is Candy Monet, who returns from a 110-day layoff for Eddie Persaud. Of the last four starters Persaud has run off a layoff of 100 days or more, three have finished third – including Candy Monet in June – and one ran second. Race 8, a 1 1/8-mile race over the outer turf, appears to have plenty of pace in it, which could set things up for One Headlight, who finished third, beaten a neck, when closing into a pedestrian pace in this same condition Aug. 27 at Saratoga. One Headlight is one of just three horses of the 16 entered that has won at the distance. Indian Mischief, trained by Linda Rice, won at this distance Sept. 3 at Saratoga when able to get away with a soft pace. That race did produce three next-out winners. Indian Mischief will likely have to deal with early pace pressure from Spiritual King and Laurel Valley. Two others to consider win candidates in here are Clear Conscience, who returns off a layoff as a new gelding for Clement, and Lachaise, who makes his second start off a layoff with blinkers added for trainer Mike Maker. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
