OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Lifetime of Chance held off Bank Frenzy by a neck to win a roughly run renewal of the $200,000 Times Square division of the New York Stallion Stakes for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct.
After turning into the stretch, Lifetime of Chance, under Dylan Davis, came out in front of Ten Cent Town, who, under Manny Franco, came out into Dr. Kraft. Later in the lane, Dr. Kraft also got bumped hard by Bank Frenzy. Dr. Kraft finished fourth, beaten five lengths.
According to the stewards, Jackie Davis, the rider of Bank Frenzy, asked for a hold on the race - she did not officially claim foul. The stewards had already lit the inquiry sign, talked to several riders, but took no action.
Asked about the incident after the race, New York Gaming Commission steward Braulio Baeza Jr. said “we have movies tomorrow,” but declined further comment.
Typically, the day after an on-track incident that involves an inquiry or objection the stewards meet with the jockeys to review replays of the race and then decide whether to assess a penalty.
Davis acknowledged that Lifetime of Chance came out a path in the stretch, but “I was able to correct him and get that straight path all the way through the lane,” Davis said. “I didn’t feel any bump or anything like that, but it looked like a little bit of a chain reaction to Manny. I thought I was in good shape.”
Lifetime of Chance actually broke on top, but quickly dropped back to third while East Coast Girl, under Jose Ortiz, opened up a clear advantage through a quarter in 22.50 seconds and a half-mile in 46.31. Entering the far turn, Davis moved Lifetime of Chance into second and had to ask his horse to keep up as Ten Cent Town came to his outside.
After he came out a path and Davis straightened him out, Lifetime of Chance overtook East Coast Girl inside the eighth pole and held off a late run from Bank Frenzy to get the win. It was 2 1/4 lengths back to East Coast Girl in third.
Davis said that down the backside Lifetime of Chance “was kind of just there. He never really wanted to jump into the bridle,” Davis said. “I was riding him and he kind of stayed in one spot and that last eighth of a mile he found some extra and he galloped out great, so I just thought that maybe he doesn’t like to be ridden so much early.”
Lifetime of Chance, owned by D J Stable and trained by Mark Casse, covered the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:18.65 and returned $6.70 as the second choice.
Following Dr. Kraft in the order of finish were General Banker, Ten Cent Town and Kerness. Coach Pitino scratched.
