OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Toupie defeated Lifelovenlaughter fair and square in the Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Laurel last month. On Sunday, the two Maryland-based runners bring their talents to Queens when they rematch in the $150,000 Autumn Days Stakes going six furlongs over Aqueduct’s outer turf course. Toupie, who won the Stewart Manor Stakes here at 2 and was fourth as the favorite in last year’s Autumn Days, could be making the last start of her career in this spot, trainer Graham Motion said. Motion selected this spot because it’s six furlongs, the same distance as the Sensible Lady. Most of her previous starts came at five or 5 1/2 furlongs. “The appeal of this race is it’s six furlongs,” Motion said. “Five-eighths is quick for her, she struggles. I ran her in the Caress [a 5 1/2-furlong race at Saratoga], and it was too fast for her.” Flavien Prat rides Toupie from post 9. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Lifelovenlaughter won a Maryland-bred stakes going six furlongs in June before her runner-up finish behind Toupie, her only two starts at six furlongs. “She’s better as a 5-year-old than she’s ever been in her life,” trainer Mike Trombetta said. “I think Graham’s horse ran her down fair and square. We ran a lifetime best, it wasn’t good enough.” Jaime Ruiz rides Lifelovenlaughter from post 7. Dontlookbacktatall is still in search of her best form for trainer Miguel Clement. In the summer of 2024, Dontlookbackatall reeled off three consecutive stakes wins before finishing second to subsequent Grade 1 winner Ag Bullet in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Sprint. Clement also sends out Danse Macabre, who won the Glen Cove here as a 3-year-old in 2023 when trained by Kelsey Danner. Do Gooder comes off an allowance win at Kentucky Downs for Jena Antonucci. Truth and Beauty steps into stakes company off a sharp maiden score at Saratoga. Cavalier Cupid won a second-level allowance at Colonial in her last start. Carle Place The $150,000 Carle Place, a turf sprint for 3-year-olds originally scheduled for last week, goes as race 6 after being postponed when the Oct. 12 card was canceled due to weather. Nine of the 10 original entrants are back in this week, and the re-draw of the race certainly aids Spiced Up, who went from post 10 to post 6. Spiced Up looks to bounce back from a last-place finish as the favorite in the Grade 1 Franklin-Simpson Stakes on Sept. 6 at Kentucky Downs. “Some horses just don’t like it,” trainer Bill Mott said of Kentucky Downs. Spiced Up did show a liking for Aqueduct as he won his turf debut here going six furlongs in June. He came out of that race to win the Grade 3 Mahony Stakes on Aug. 10 at Saratoga. A repeat of either one of those efforts puts him very much in the mix in here. No Evidence, who finished third to Spiced Up in the Mahony Stakes, scratched out of an allowance earlier in the week to run here. Flavien Prat, not named last week, has the call Sunday. Trainer Phil Schoenthal turns Cairo Caper back in distance after making four starts at a mile or longer – including a second-place finish in the Penn Mile over yielding turf – since he received the horse from owner William Thompson. Cairo Caper twice won sprinting on turf at Woodbine when in the barn of Nathan Squires last year. “It was always the thinking that maybe he could get a mile on his best day, and he ran well in the Penn Mile but he had a lot of things going for him that day be it a short field and softer ground, which I think he likes,” Schoenthal said. “Obviously, at Colonial and Saratoga, he either met some better foes or couldn’t quite handle the trip,” Schoenthal added. “We’re trying to alleviate those two things.” Forged Steel, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., will sprint on turf for the first time after a fourth going a mile at Gulfstream in August and sixth in the Gun Runner Stakes at Kentucky Downs in September. At Gulfstream, Forged Steel “showed speed and kind of weakened the last bit,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “I thought his run at Kentucky Downs was similar. He sat in a good spot and weakened. He should have a very good shot on the cutback.” Out on Bail, Fire Pit, Landing Craft, Global Steve, and Cyclonite complete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
