The Lieutenant makes sales debut as sire at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall sale

A major storyline at this November’s fall mixed sales in Kentucky will be the first mares offered in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify, who retired to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky for 2019. At the same time, his Grade 3-winning half-brother The Lieutenant entered stud at Sequel Stallions in New York, and he also will test the commercial market with first mares in foal this fall, getting a local chance at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale.
A pair of mares carrying foals by The Lieutenant are among the offerings at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall sale, which will be held Tuesday in the company's Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., down the block from Saratoga Race Course. A total of 272 racing or breeding prospects, broodmares, and weanlings are cataloged for the sale, which is geared toward local breeders and pinhookers. Last year's auction posted across-the-board gains in gross, average, and median, with 118 horses sold for revenues of $3,381,200, an average price of $29,402, and a median of $20,000. The 2017 average and median figures were $22,738 and $12,000, respectively.
The Lieutenant, by Street Sense and out of the Grade 3-placed Ghostzapper mare Stage Magic, won the Grade 3 All American Stakes at Golden Gate last year and also finished second in the Grade 2 Suburban Stakes at Belmont and third in the Grade 2 Californian Stakes at Santa Anita. McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds consigns both of his mares in foal at the Saratoga fall sale, as agent. They are Parabolique, a placed Arch mare from the family of Group 1 winner Poet's Voice, and Savannah Harbor, a winning Rockport Harbor mare who has produced one starter to date.
Other first-crop covering sires this year in New York include classic-placed Grade 2 winner Destin (one mare in foal cataloged), graded stakes winner Frank Conversation (four), and winner Redesdale (one).
One year prior to bringing in The Lieutenant, Sequel added another well-bred young stallion in multiple stakes winner Union Jackson, a son of Curlin out of Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick, who is from the immediate family of Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming. A dozen weanlings from his first crop will be offered locally at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall sale.
