ELMONT, N.Y. - Moments after suffering a brutal beat with his first runner of the Del Mar meet, trainer Doug O’Neill celebrated a wild win with his last runner of the Belmont summer season. Liam’s Pride, a 13-1 longshot ridden by Dylan Davis, took advantage of a spirited pace duel between 1-5 favorite Long Weekend and 10-1 Wondrwherecraigis and just got up by a head in the final strides to win Friday’s $80,000 Gold Fever Stakes for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park. Wondrwherecraigis, ridden by Jose Lezcano, finished a half-length in front of Long Weekend, but the stewards - following an inquiry they posted immediately after the race - disqualified Wondrwherecraigis from second and placed him third for interference with Long Weekend, who was elevated to second. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to Hopeful Treasure in fourth. Newstome was fifth, followed by Listentoyourheart. Premier Star scratched. The victory was just the second from eight starts for Liam’s Pride, a son of Liam’s Map and a half-brother to the Grade 1 winner Morning Line. Liam’s Pride was coming off a last-place finish in the War Chant Stakes on turf at Churchill Downs on May 23. :: Click to learn about our DRF's Free Past Performance program. “We know this horse is a better than average 3-year-old and we were just trying to get creative,” O’Neill, speaking from Del Mar where Blame It On Kitty lost a neck decision in the opener, said of the turf try. “Obviously, that didn’t work out. It’s apparent that a track with a little moisture in the ground he sure took to today, all the credit to Dylan. What a great ride.” On paper, it looked like Long Weekend was the main speed in the race under Jose Ortiz. But Wondrwherecraigis, under Jose Lezcano, outbroke him and Ortiz set up shop outside of Wondrwherecraigis through a quarter in 21.65 seconds and a half-mile in 44.66 over an extremely sloppy track. Davis had Liam’s Pride in fourth early, then third around the turn. He engaged the leaders turning for home and was three wide outside of Wondrwherecraigis and Long Weekend, with neither of those two yielding through the lane. Wondrwherecraigis did drift out a few paths squeezing Long Weekend a tad nearing the finish. Meanwhile, Davis had Liam’s Pride in the clear and persevering to the wire, sticking his gray head in front two jumps from home. “I loved what I saw in front of me, a little duel, he ranged up a little earlier than I thought but it was okay with this track so I decided to let him do that,” said Davis, who won three races on the card. “Once he got up to them at the quarter pole, he kind of wanted to lean with those two so I reacted and pulled him off and let him focus on what’s in front of him.” Liam’s Pride, owned by Tom Mansor, Richard Pushor, Robert Roy, Calvert Chadwick, and Jerry Caroom, covered the six furlongs in 1:10.70 and returned $28. “He’s an average-sized horse with a good stride, a real fighter,” O’Neill said. “His form’s kind of spotty but he’s shown us at certain times that he’s a better than average sort.” Liam’s Pride will be one of about 18 horses O’Neill will have based in Saratoga this summer. Stakes opportunities for Liam’s Pride would include the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens on Aug. 1 and/or the Grade 2, $150,000 Amsterdam on Aug. 29.
