Despite being more accomplished on the racetrack than Not This Time, multiple Grade 1 winner Liam’s Map has been overshadowed by his Grade 3-winning younger half-brother as a stud over the last few years. Not This Time has quickly climbed the ladder of the nation’s leading sires, finishing second to Into Mischief on the general sire earnings list in 2025 while leading the 2026 general earnings list as of May 18. Meanwhile, Liam’s Map has been a quietly consistent and versatile sire. This past Saturday, he got his day in the sun, as he is now a newly minted classic sire, with Preakness Stakes victor Napoleon Solo leading a day which saw multiple graded stakes wins added to Liam’s Map’s résumé. Liam’s Map and Not This Time are both out of the Florida-bred Trippi mare Miss Macy Sue, a fine racemare in her own right, as she won 11 of 25 starts and earned more than $880,000. Miss Macy Sue was a six-time stakes winner, highlighted in 2007 by wins in the Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs and in the Presque Isle Masters in Pennsylvania. She also finished third in the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint that fall at Monmouth Park. Miss Macy Sue went on to become a foundation broodmare for the Albaugh Family Stables, producing Grade 1 winner Liam’s Map, Grade 3 winner Not This Time, and stakes winners Matera and Taylor S. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Liam’s Map, by Unbridled’s Song, was offered by the Albaughs at the Keeneland September yearling sale and was an $800,000 purchase to race for Teresa Viola Racing Stables and West Point Thoroughbreds. Trained throughout his career by Todd Pletcher, millionaire Liam’s Map won 6 of 8 starts and was never worse than second. In his Grade 1 debut in the 2015 Whitney at Saratoga, he had a clear lead in the stretch before being run down by a neck by Honor Code, who went on to be a divisional Eclipse Award champion. Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist was behind them in third in a strong field. Liam’s Map went on to end his career with back-to-back Grade 1 wins, taking the Woodward at Saratoga by 4 3/4 lengths and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland by 2 1/2 lengths. Retired to the Farish family’s Lane’s End Farm, Liam’s Map debuted by finishing fourth by earnings in a strong freshman sire class in 2019. He led the class with two Grade 1 winners – Basin in the Hopeful and Wicked Whisper in the Frizette. Both of those wins came around one turn on dirt. However, in the years to follow, Liam’s Map proved that his offspring could run around two turns on a variety of surfaces. His résumé includes Grade 1 winners Burnham Square, Juju’s Map, Colonel Liam, and Deterministic. Napoleon Solo won both his starts at 2 last year, including the Grade 1 Champagne at a one-turn mile at Aqueduct. After “nothing went right to start his 3-year-old year,” trainer Chad Summers said, with both of his two-turn starts resulting in unplaced efforts, Napoleon Solo redeemed himself with his Preakness win. There, he raced close to the pace, took over, and could not be caught down the lane, demonstrating his sire’s speed. “We felt like his biggest asset is his cruising speed,” Summers said in the post-Preakness press conference. “He has a high cruising speed. You saw it in the Champagne when he was at his best.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages. A few hours after Napoleon Solo walked home in the sunset at Laurel Park with his blanket of black-eyed Susans, beneath the lights at Churchill Downs, Burnham Square delivered another bright spot to the day for Liam’s Map. Burnham Square is a multiple graded stakes winner on dirt, including last year’s Grade 1 Blue Grass. The gelding – who, like Napoleon Solo, was bred by crossing Liam’s Map over a Scat Daddy mare – has now emerged as a leading grass performer. He won the Grade 3 Louisville on Saturday night, his second consecutive dominant graded stakes win at 1 1/2 miles on turf, with those victories coming by a combined 14 1/2 lengths. Napoleon Solo’s Preakness win was another jewel for the Unbridled line in the American classics. Unbridled won the 1990 Kentucky Derby and went on to sire a winner of each of Triple Crown race, with 1996 Derby winner Grindstone, 2000 Preakness winner Red Bullet, and 2003 Belmont winner Empire Maker. The stamina influence has continued through the generations. Grindstone sired 2004 Belmont winner Birdstone, who went on to sire 2009 Derby winner Mine That Bird and 2009 Belmont winner Summer Bird. Empire Maker had two sons finish second in the Kentucky Derby – Pioneerof the Nile in 2009 and Bodemeister in 2012. Both went on to produce classic winners, with Pioneerof the Nile siring 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and Bodemeister siring 2017 Derby winner Always Dreaming. Liam’s Map is the second son of Unbridled’s Song to sire a classic winner. Unbridled’s Song’s champion son Arrogate produced only three crops before his untimely death. Those crops included 2023 Belmont winner Arcangelo and 2024 Preakness winner Seize the Grey. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
