Liam Smith may run in Breeders' Cup Sprint, Miller says
ARCADIA, Calif. - The former $50,000 claimer Liam Smith may run in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
Liam Smith led throughout an allowance race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on Saturday, finishing in 1:13.90. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 107, which equaled his speed figure from a $50,000 claiming race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 27.
Liam Smith won in August by 12 lengths and was claimed that day by owner and trainer Peter Miller. Liam Smith’s Beyer figure in August was the highest for a sprinter at the Del Mar summer meeting.
“We’re going to consider the Breeders’ Cup,” Miller said on Sunday. “I’m feeling pretty good about him.”
Liam Smith won Saturday’s allowance race by 5 1/2 lengths as the 7-10 favorite, his fourth win in six starts.
The BC Sprint could be his stakes debut. Liam Smith won a $50,000 claimer for maidens in January, the day he was claimed by trainer Jeff Mullins and won a starter allowance in February.
Liam Smith was claimed from Mullins on Aug. 27.
