Lewisfield broke a six-race losing streak with a determined front-running effort in the $75,000 Howard and Sondra Bender Memorial Stakes at Laurel Park on Saturday, holding off comebacking Still Having Fun by a neck. Although Lewisfield hadn’t won since March, he has turned in some of his best races at Laurel, where he has now scored seven of his eight career wins. In his last start 10 days ago, Lewisfield finished sixth after encountering traffic problems in the Fabulous Strike Stakes at Penn National. “He came out of the race fine, so we came here,” trainer Jeff Runco said. “It’s hard to pass up a Maryland-bred stakes. We thought, 'Let’s bounce him out of there today and put him close.' He loves this track.” Lewisfield raced on the early pace between horses under jockey Horacio Karamanos, then put away Oldies But Goodies in upper stretch. He dug in during the stretch run to prevail after a handful of horses were spread out across the track just behind him at the furlong pole. Lewisfield paid $11 to win and stopped the teletimer in 1:09.97. A 5-year-old Great Notion gelding owned by Linda Zang, Lewisfield is now 8 for 23 with earnings of $486,617. Still Having Fun was never far back but was stuck on the rail the entire race. He was getting to Lewisfield late but ran out of real estate while making his first start since May. Clubman finished third, a neck behind Still Having Fun. Favored Taco Supream had a wide trip and ended up fourth, beaten only three-quarters of a length. Alwaymining raced prominently for much of the race but lacked a closing kick and finished fifth, beaten a total of two lengths.
