HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Letta’s Legacy, who will be seeking her fourth straight win in Sunday’s featured allowance at Oaklawn Park, is a special homebred for trainer C.R. Trout. She keeps the memory of his late wife, Arletta, alive. “My wife had named all of my horses through the years and then when she passed away, we thought we’d name one after her and that’s what we did,” Trout said. Arletta died in 2019. Some of her popular horse names include Shotgun Kowboy, who earned more than $1 million for the family stable. Trout, now 81, has a 12-horse stable based at Will Rogers Downs and has shipped Letta’s Legacy into town. A three-time stakes winner against Oklahoma-breds, she is part of a field of nine in a second-level allowance for fillies and mares at six furlongs. It’s slotted as the eighth of nine races Sunday. “I’ve always wanted to run her at Oaklawn,” Trout said. “She deserves a shot. We’ll just see how she matches up with these other fillies. It’s a tough race, and I know it is, but she’ll give a good account of herself.” :: Live racing action at Oaklawn Park! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Letta’s Legacy has worked consecutive bullets at Will Rogers in preparation for her first start at 5. Her most recent move was a half-mile in 46.80 seconds on Feb. 10. The sharp drills are another reason she is shipping to Oaklawn, Trout said. “I just can’t keep working her and not run her, so I decided to take a shot,” he said. It’s difficult for races in Oklahoma to fill for Letta’s Legacy. She has been on a roll since October, when she won the Oklahoma Classics Night Distaff at Remington Park. Letta’s Legacy proceeded to win an Oklahoma-bred allowance sprint at Remington in November over three-time horse of the meet Miss Code West. Letta’s Legacy then closed the meet with a win over open company in a first-level allowance Dec. 17 to push her career totals to nine wins from 18 starts for earnings of $325,599. Letta’s Legacy on Sunday will break from post 9 under regular rider David Cabrera, who is now based at Oaklawn. “We’ve got quite a bit of speed away from the gate and we’ll just see the inside, how it works, and David can decide what he wants to do,” Trout said. During her streak, Letta’s Legacy has won from both on and just off the pace. The daughter of Practical Joke is a half-sister to fellow stakes winners Bring It On Dude, Sunday Night Miss, and Sunday Flashback. Sunday’s race includes Queen’s Martini, who is coming off a third-place finish in The Bugler, an overnight stakes at Oaklawn. Joel Rosario has the mount from post 7 for trainer Ron Moquett. Moquett also has a top contender in the seventh race, a first-level allowance for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs. He will saddle Color Comin’ In, who makes her first start since finishing third to Percy’s Bar in the Debutante in June at Churchill Downs. Percy’s Bar would go on to run third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
