Let's Go Donki eyes Japanese 1000 Guineas-Japanese Oaks double
Let’s Go Donki can become the first filly to complete the Japanese 1000 Guineas and Japanese Oaks double in three years Sunday at Tokyo Racecourse.
The Grade 1 Japanese Oaks has a purse of approximately $1,663,457 and is run at 1 1/2 miles on turf. The race drew a field of 18 3-year-old fillies, 13 of which ran April 12 in the Japanese 1000 Guineas at Hansin Racecourse. Culminar and Contessa Thule, second and third in the Japanese 1000 Guineas, are part of the Japanese Oaks field, a race also known as the Yushun Himba.
Let’s Go Donki, by King Kamehameha, is trained by Tomoyuki Umeda and never has been worse than third in six starts. She led throughout the Japanese 1000 Guineas and will face a stamina test in the Japanese Oaks.
If she wins, Let’s Go Donki will be the first filly to win the 1000 Guineas and Oaks since Gentildonna in 2012. Eight fillies have completed the double since 1984.
The Japanese Oaks field includes Sing with Joy and Dear My Darling, who were first and second in the Grade 2 Flora Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf April 26 at Tokyo Racecourse. They did not start in the 1000 Guineas.
