Letruska won't enter Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Letruska, the 2021 Eclipse champion older female, was not entered Monday in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and will be given some time off while her connections decide on her future, trainer Fausto Gutierrez said Monday.
“She needs a break after the last race,” Gutierrez said. “She probably needs to be a broodmare, but we’ll give it some time to think about it.”
Letruska, a 6-year-old mare by Super Saver, won 19 of 28 starts and earned $3,053,529 for owner St. George Stable. In 2021, she went 6 for 8 with Grade 1 victories in the Apple Blossom, Ogden Phipps, Personal Ensign, and Spinster. She finished 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff after getting used up in a speed duel.
This year, she won the Grade 3 Royal Delta and repeated in the Apple Blossom before losing her next three starts, including the Spinster in which she was fourth.
Her connections had pre-entered her in the seven-furlong Filly and Mare Sprint and not the Distaff, thinking the turnback in seven furlongs might be better for her.
Now, they feel rest -- and possibly retirement -- is best.
