Lethal Grande euthanized at 8

Lethal Grande, the richest Oregon-bred ever, was euthanized after fracturing both sesamoid bones in his left front leg while racing at Portland Meadows on Monday. He was 8.

Regular rider Joe Crispin managed to keep Lethal Grande on his feet while pulling him up, but his injuries were deemed irreparable and he was put down about an hour after his accident.

Lethal Grande, who began his career racing for the late breeder and trainer Pat Sonnen, won 26 of 80 starts, including six local stakes, for earnings of $409,788.

A son of Corslew and La Bardot, Lethal Grande raced for eight different owners and 11 different trainers, and he won races at four different tracks. He did his best work in his home state, winning 10 of 20 starts at Portland Meadows. Since being claimed for $32,000 on Aug. 19 of last year, he had been trained by Tom Longstaff.
