Lenape Rim returns from long layoff to capture Lyphard Stakes
Lenape Rim, returning to turf for the first time since September and unraced since November, scored a two-length victory in Friday night’s $76,500 Lyphard Stakes for Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares at Penn National.
The 6-year-old Lenape Rim ($17), ridden by Josean Ramirez for trainer Mike Salvaggio, who owns the mare in partnership with Norris Gelman and Daniel McConnell, also won the 2012 running of the Lyphard. Last year, she won back-to-back stakes for statebreds, including the Wiseman’s Ferry at Penn National.
Racing over a turf course rated soft, Lenape Rim covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.64 for her ninth victory in 30 starts. She increased her bankroll to $457,806.
Ferry Music got up by a head at 30-1 for second over 2-1 second choice Nellie Cashman, a Grade 3 winner last season. The coupled entry of Appealing Cat and Daylight Ride finished fourth and fifth as the 3-5 favorite.
