Champion and classic winner Lemon Drop Kid, a consistently successful stallion who hails from some of the cornerstone families of Lane's End Farm, has been pensioned and will continue to live out his retirement at his longtime home on that farm. The son of former Lane's End sire Kingmambo is 25 this year. “Lemon Drop Kid has been a Lane’s End stalwart for 20 years,” Lane’s End’s Bill Farish said in a press release. “We are very fortunate to be associated with a horse like him. We want to thank the syndicate members and breeders who have supported him for the past two decades. His legacy will live on through his sons and daughters across the globe.” Lemon Drop Kid, who is from the immediate female family of champions and classic winners A.P. Indy and Summer Squall, both classic sires in their own right, was co-bred by the Farish family and sold via the Lane's End consignment as a yearling. Racing for Jeanne Vance and trainer Scotty Schulhofer, he compiled a record of 24-10-3-3 and earned $3,245,370. Lemon Drop Kid won the Grade 1 Futurity Stakes as a juvenile and was second in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes. After finishing ninth in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Grade 2 Peter Pan, he was sent away as a longshot in the 1999 Belmont Stakes, in which Charismatic was bidding for the Triple Crown. Lemon Drop Kid triggered a $61.50 payout with his head victory over Vision and Verse, overshadowed as Charismatic was injured while finishing third. Lemon Drop Kid commanded the spotlight in his own right that summer, winning the Grade 1 Travers Stakes after finishing second in the local prep, the Grade 2 Jim Dandy.   In 2000, Lemon Drop Kid was third in the Grade 1 Pimlico Special, then captured four consecutive important events in New York, taking the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap, Grade 2 Suburban Handicap, Grade 1 Whitney Handicap, and Grade 1 Woodward. Despite finishing off the board in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and Breeders' Cup Classic, that run earned him the Eclipse Award as outstanding older male. Retired to Lane's End, Lemon Drop Kid is the sire of 821 winners, including 107 stakes winners, through Thursday, according to Equineline statistics. With several crops still on the track, he is approaching the nine-figure threshold in career progeny earnings, with $97,338,403. Lemon Drop Kid is the sire of Lemons Forever, winner of the 2006 Kentucky Oaks, as well as Grade 1 winners Beach Patrol, Cannock Chase, Christmas Kid, Citronnade, Richard's Kid, Romantic Vision, Santa Teresita, and Somali Lemonade. Lemon Drop Kid also is the broodmare sire of 40 stakes winners, with Lemons Forever producing Breeders' Cup Distaff winner and Eclipse Award champion Forever Unbridled and Grade 1 winner Unbridled Forever. Another daughter, Without You Babe, is the dam of Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz and of Without Parole, a Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot. Lemon Drop Kid's daughters also have produced Eclipse Award champion Finest City, Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Bar of Gold, and Grade 1 winners Digital Age, Divisidero, Lochte, Yellow Agate.
