Leading Pennsylvania sire Jump Start dead at 20
Jump Start, a perennial leading sire in Pennsylvania, was euthanized on May 19 at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center due to complications from colitis. The son of A.P. Indy was 20.
Jump Start, who was a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed as a juvenile, initially stood for his breeder, Overbrook Farm, in Kentucky. He moved to Pennsylvania for the 2010 season, and most recently stood at Northview Stallion Station in Peach Bottom, Pa. He has been among the state's top four general sires each year since 2010, and was the state's leading general sire in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Jump Start's top runners include millionaire Rail Trip, who won the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup in 2009. He won three other graded stakes, and finished third in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Overall, Jump Start is the sire of 27 graded/group stakes winners, including multiple graded stakes winner Prayer for Relief, who earned more than $2.2 million; multiple Grade 2 winner and millionaire Pants On Fire; and Southern Hemisphere champions Idolo Portento, Seresta, and Sexy Reasons. His multiple stakes-winning son Icabad Crane finished third in the 2008 Preakness Stakes.
