Barbara D. Livingston Frost Giant, New York's leading freshman sire with his initial crop, has continued on to reign as the state's top juvenile sire.

Frost Giant was New York’s leading freshman sire of 2012, establishing a state record in progeny earnings for that category. He has continued to show prowess with the juvenile set, finishing as New York’s leading 2-year-old sire of 2016.

Frost Giant, who stands at Keane Stud, sired 17 juvenile winners in 2016 for earnings of $727,319. That was enough to edge out Sequel Stallions freshman Mission Impazible, with eight winners and $653,108 earned.

Frost Giant’s youngsters were led last year by Miss Freeze, a 6 1/4-length winner of the Lynbrook Stakes at Belmont in her career debut. Bobby On Fleek was second to the well-regarded Syndergaard in the Funny Cide Stakes at Saratoga. The stallion also was represented by stakes-placed Passporttovictory, Remstin, Frosty Nurse, and Sonido.

A multiple Group 3 winner in Ireland, Frost Giant recorded his biggest victory in the Grade 1 Suburban Handicap in 2008. The Giant’s Causeway horse is from the extended family of Grade 1 winners and sires Bluegrass Cat, Girolamo, and Super Saver.

Leading freshman sire: Mission Impazible

Sequel Stallions stands New York’s perennial leading sire in Freud and now has an up-and-coming horse behind him in the Empire State’s leading freshman.

Mission Impazible, a multiple Grade 2-winning millionaire by Unbridled’s Song, sired eight winners from his first crop on the track for earnings of $653,108. That was more than enough to overpower freshman-class runner-up Boys At Toscanova, with three winners and $103,201. Moreover, Mission Impazible finished a close third on the juvenile sire list to established stallion Frost Giant.

Mission Impazible’s top runner last year was the New York-born Silver Mission, who was bred by and races in partnership for Sequel and Twin Creeks. The latter outfit campaigned the sire. Silver Mission won the Tremont Stakes at Belmont by 6 1/4 lengths against open company and finished third in the Rockville Centre Stakes.

Mission Impazible also is the sire of the stakes-placed runners Ethan Hunt and Paz the Bourbon from his first crop.
